I first reported on Ho Chi Minh City’s hostess bars way back in 2013 when this website was just getting off the ground. The focus of that post was on a string of hostess bars on Hai Ba Trung. After many of those bars were hit hard in a major crackdown, I published another report on the hostess bars of Ho Chi Minh City. I have been updating this review of the hostess bars of Saigon ever since.
A lot of things have changed in the time that has passed though much has stayed the same. While I am constantly publishing information on new places around the world I do like to continue past coverage whenever possible. Thus I present you with the following information on the state of HCMC’s hostess bars today.
Pasteur Street hostess bars
Pasteur street is probably home to the most hostess bars. They are all bunched together on a few blocks of Pasteur near the intersection with Ham Nghi. Most of the Pasteur bars are oriented toward in bar entertainment. They do not operate as places where women can find guys to pay them for sex.
The Pub is one of the largest and most popular hostess bars in Ho Chi Minh City. There are lots of ladies working the bar. Each and every one is fit, attractive and well dressed. A bar sits on the left side of the space. The rest of the large floor is filled with things like dart boards and pool tables. The place stays quite busy.
Fox at 82 Pasteur is home to many women including quite a few real lookers. The ladies are fun and friendly and they dress very well. Most can speak some English. The bar is popular and can get a bit overcrowded which makes it difficult to move around. There is no bar fine system in place but some of the women have been known to meet with guys they find amiable outside of the bar. Occasionally Fox has some professional dancers come in to strut their stuff on the bar in sexy outfits. Although those ladies have curvy and mostly man made bodies they don’t get nude and usually depart right after their performance is over.
Willow nearby is a long but quite bar that never really seems to get going. Apparently the entire staff quit their jobs at once a few weeks ago so things will have to change one way or another.
Rock Bar at 68 Pasteur is one of the most popular bars on the street. Quite a few ladies work the bar and they are for the most part attractive but the staff seems to be a little older on average than those working at other bars on the street. There are stripper poles on the bar but any sort of dancing there happens rarely. Still the place seems to be loved by customers and it gets quite filled inside many nights. The best thing at Rock Bar seems to be the pool table. Customers able to beat one of the ladies on staff receive a free pint of beer.
Diamond Bar at 94 Pasteur probably has the sexiest women of any bar in the area both in terms of looks and dress. It’s not out of the ordinary to see the gals at Diamond dressed up in costume or other revealing outfits. Despite that it never seems to get very crowded. That may be due to the fact that a lot of the ladies at Diamond Bar are surprisingly shy especially towards new comers. Most can speak some English but there are a few who have very limited English skills. Except for the lack of a bar fine system Diamond Bar is reminiscent of some of the hostess bars in Thailand such as those situated on Soi 33 in Bangkok. That’s especially true when the professional dancers show up to get down on the bar in skimpy dress.
Around Pasteur
Check In is a new bar on Ham Nhgi itself. Just around the corner from the other bars on Pasteur it is a quite nice place inside. It is run by a local woman who is friendly and eager to meet and party with customers though she does seem to have a habit of drinking quite a bit. There are five or six women on staff at Check In in their twenties including one or two with absolutely amazing bodies. All of the women are friendly and can speak at least basic English though most claim to be virgins or otherwise refuse to go anywhere with customers they don’t know. In reality many of the women do spend time with local and foreigner guys outside of the bar though they seem to look more for a dating situation than a lump sum of money.
One street over on Ho Tung Mau there is another smaller concentration of bars with a similar business model. They aren’t as popular as the bars on Pasteur as a general rule but they do have their fans and followers.
Saigon Retro at 113 Ho Tung Mau is the typical example of the hostess bars in this area. It doesn’t stand out in any real regard but it does have a pool, darts, and a staff filled with some really lovely ladies who are mostly in their twenties.
Friends nearby is quite similar. While there isn’t necessarily anything special about this bar it has a dedicated set of expat regulars who can often be found in the bar. That said the place is still very welcoming of newcomers and the staff contains some really sweet ladies who don’t seem to have been hardened by their work.
Rumors Pub which opened last year is considered the best bar on Ho Tung Mau by many and for good reason. While the bar is often quiet inside the place has a large staff of more than a dozen women. The ladies of course range in looks but most are quite attractive. On top of that they are all very friendly up to and including the woman in charge of the place. Rumors is a lot like the hostess bars of Phnom Penh.
Kim’s Tavern over on Huynh Thuc Khang has nice enough looking ladies inside and draws a lot of customers. At times guys do hook up with women outside of the bar but normally only after spending inordinate amounts of money. It seems to be a fairly normal Ho Chi Minh City hostess bar all considered.
Bui Vien backpacker district
There are now more hostess bars on the famous backpacker strip Bui Vien then there ever were. At one time there were just a few of these pubs but now they are blossoming up and down the street. Oddly enough most of the women in this tourist centered area do not speak English.
There are many of these bars and none stand out much from one another. Lady drinks can be on the expensive side at around the equivalent of about five US dollars. Still a mostly western foreign clientele continues to visit these bars in enough numbers to keep them and open and motivate them to expand.
One reason may be that quite a few of the ladies in these bars will go out with customers to a nearby hotel for around 2,000,000 Vietnamese Dong ($88 USD). There are no hard and fast rules behind this however and it all seems to depend on the circumstance.
As a side note most of the many hotels on Bui Vien are decidedly not girl friendly hotels despite the growing presence of girlie bars.
Hai Ba Trung bars
Hai Ba Trung Street was once the center of activity for Saigon’s hostess bars, but the raids of 2013 put a stop to that.
In the past bars were located at 91, 51, 49, 37 and 35 Hai Ba Trung. There were also a few more on nearby streets. Saigon NY ws at the corner of Dong Du and Hai Ba Trung. Thien Loc was at the corner of Hai Ba Truong and Mac Thi Buoi.
“Lounge The High” at 49 Hai Ba Trung Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1 survived the initial crackdown but later went under. The only other bar to survive the raids on Hai Ba Trung was the infamous “91”. For a while anyway. That bar went the way of the others and eventually closed too. Today the spot is home to one of the city’s many coffee shops.
The HBT bars were once among the liveliest in the city. They featured bevies of women who for the most part looked very good. Things like topless pool and oral services in back corners were common place. Guys who paid a bar fine were whisked away with women of their choosing into waiting taxis. Those taxis ended up at short time hotels that looked the other way on restrictions against foreigners sharing a room with unmarried locals.
But those days are long gone. Most of the hostess bars around today are of the tame variety. For the most part guys who visit these new bars simply pay for the pleasure of being around women. It is something like the strip clubs of the US.
Other Areas
Finally there is one bar mentioned in a past report still survives. That’s VIC at 55 Ho Xuan Huong in District 3. It remains a popular place with Asian customers who are mostly expats or businessmen in town for the long haul. Only a few of the women on staff can speak English to any real extent and they seem to be the least attractive ladies in the place.
VIC has pool and a fairly large staff of women. Some of the women will go home with some of the guys for an expected tip of around 2 million Dong though only after the bar closes at midnight. This is more or less the norm in the hostess bars in Ho Chi Minh City these days.
There is an exception. Bar 29 over on Dong Khoi is one of the last of the original naughty style bars in Saigon. One can only wonder how the place remains open in the heart of an area that is constantly being developed with luxury shopping and dining.
Perhaps the hefty fees levied onto anyone who walks into the bar have something to do with it. On the other hand such fees and the kind of attitude behind those setting them may be one of the reasons the old style hostess bars have for the most part disappeared from Ho Chi Minh City. How long will this relic last? Only time will tell.
Any info on Hanoi?
Not now but maybe in the future. Posts on some other parts of Asia that haven’t yet been reported on here are coming before year end. So are a number of posts on Latin America. Cheers.
I’m back to Ho Chi Minh City after 2 years. Last time I brought along a Thai girl, so I couldn’t have any real fun (aside from banging my travel companion every day, that is).
This time I’m flying solo. I arrived earlier today and I headed straight for Bui Vien, with a bit of skepticism after reading the report, but I must say that the bar scene there isn’t half-bad. I stopped at 159 Bar and I was surprised with how attractive the bargirls are. Coming from Phnom Penh, it’s hard not to appreciate the lighter skin and bigger breasts of Viet girls!
The bar was packed with a mix of Western and Asian customers and I only managed get a hold of one girl, but she was friendly and eager to go to my hotel. Unfortunately she wouldn’t budge from 2 million VND for short time, so I declined the offer. It’s the same amount Thai bargirls ask these days… but it’s almost double what Khmer girls want in Phnom Penh, and triple the going rate on Soi 6 in Pattaya, so my brain couldn’t rationalize the expense.
Speaking of expenses, my bill came out at 420,000 VND (less than 20 US dollars) for 4 or 5 lady drinks and two beers for myself. Not a whole lot. I played a couple games of pool, groped the girl a little (yep, even on touristy Bui Vien that seems to be ok), and left in a good mood. Did I mention I love Viet chicks?
Now it’s time to get some sleep before getting sucked off at Benny’s first thing in the morning.
Thanks for the report. The hostess bars and those on Bui Vien especially are targeted at foreigners so they charge a lot more. That’s true in Vietnam of nearly anything not meant for locals. Cheers.
I got a taste of that this morning. I had a guy polish my shoes and do some small repairments to them and he quoted a ridiculous (for Vietnam) $50. Then again, I can’t think of any Southeast Asian country where this doesn’t happen, except maybe Singapore.
I don’t think the hostess bars on Bui Vien are overpriced, lady drinks are $4 and beers for customers around $1.5, which are basically the same prices as Cambodia. Also, apparently on Bui Vien there are no barfines (versus $10 in the Khmer hostess bars).
I know about the lack of barfines because I went back to that bar, and this time I took a girl out. I got her down to 1.5 million, so the girls’ rates are negotiable. That’s a very reasonable $66 USD (or 2,100 Thai baht, which is what most oilies charge in Bangkok).
The girl was cool, lots of kisses. She spoke great English and even a few words of my native tongue. Tight pussy, as one would expect in this corner of the world. She gave me a BBBJ and thoroughly licked my balls, although she insisted on a condom for the main act. To make up for that, I came on her body and rubbed my cum all over her ass. She left with a big smile and said she hopes to see me again.
I find the hostess bars in Saigon to be almost a carbon copy of those in Phnom Penh, the similarity is striking. I feel right at home. I’m actually enjoying the scene a tad more in Vietnam, for the simple reason that the girls are hotter!
Thanks for the update. While I don’t doubt that it happens I can’t say that I have ever been ripped off in decades of travel around Southeast Asia. The only area I ever had problems were in some run ins with taxi drivers in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Manila who refused to use meters and instead quoted high prices. Since that happens to locals in those places too I can’t say I was targeted as a foreigner. The familiarity between the bars in Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh only makes sense. As I explained on a much earlier post the whole concept of hostess bars was brought over from Vietnam to begin with which is why a lot of the early bar owners in Phnom Penh were Vietnamese. I do believe that bar owners in Vietnam do get some money when the women they employ leave a bar even if there is no publicly listed “bar fine”. That obviously doesn’t include the many hostess bars such as those on Pasteur where the women do not leave with customers so there really no cut for the bosses as a plain matter of fact. Things are typically up for negotiation in many aspects of life in Vietnam including the money paid to sex workers in venues ranging from bars to barbershop brothels but the owners of these places often have a set rate that they deduct no matter the price paid by the consumer. As for beauty that is of course in the eye of the beholder. Cheers.
That’s correct, I heard from the girls on Bui Vien that they must pay 300,000 VND to the bar every time they leave with a customer. So there is a hidden barfine of sorts.
That’s probably why a lot of those girls say that 1 million VND is “too little”… they would only pocket 700,000. I’ve found that 1.5 million is enough for some of them (though they all quote 2 million in the beginning). These are short time rates BTW.
Finally, they all seem keen on giving out their LINE or Zalo contact info. It could be a way for them to avoid paying the bar.
Thanks for the on the ground confirmation. I thought that was the case. The going rate at bars where take out is possible seems to be between one and one and a half million though in Vietnam service providers will often try to get as much as they can out of customers they think are unaware. There is also a strong culture of barter. One million is what the women at the few remaining hostess bars that operate on that model on Hai Ba Trung are asking regulars at the moment. Cheers.
Thanks for the great report. I have never tried the bar girl in Vietnam and it is good to know the similarity of the system between the Khmer and the Viet and no bar fine. Cheers!
There are different kinds of bars. In what is now the most common version of Ho Chi Minh City hostess bar the women simply won’t leave with customers so there really is “no barfine”. In a handful of others that remain from an earlier era the women on staff are keen to quickly exit with customers for a set amount of money that the managers almost certainly get a cut of. There are also some around the Bui Vien backpacker area which basically operate like most hostess bars in Phnom Penh. Those places obviously wouldn’t want to publicize a bar fine but I do believe that women working those bars who leave with customers do pay a fee to their bosses. Cheers.
I remember the old “Linda’s Bar” or alternatively “U2” as I recall, on either Dong Du or Mac Thi Buoi in the early 2000’s. Maybe Bar 29 is a relic of that. Had some memorable evenings in that one. Never got ripped off there, maybe try 29 my next trip.
Thanks for the report. Cheers.
I had better experiences with service staff in regular Bars, it took some effort, but possible to met girls later. It didnt always lead to sex, but fun.
For me Saigon Hostess Bars deliver very little value, girls are ruthless, as many ladydrinks as possible in a short time, and lackluster vibe.
A few Bj Bars in the Dong Khoi area might still be around. A place like Smiley appear to be in business. In 2015 there were 5-6 shops in that area and the girls were much more friendly compared to their sisters in typical no hands on Hostess Bars.
Thanks for the comment and report Alex. Cheers!
Apparently Saigon hostess have always been canny or even ruthless. The article “Sexual Warfare of Saigon Bargirls” was printed sept 1967 in Atlas Magazine. The storyline is how the girls take advantage of GI:s, promising sex but not deliver.
However, 500t US soldiers got a STD in Vietnam. So many girls provided sex, and (a majority?) of the Bargirls didnt mind that. The Anthropologist Mia Lan Gustafsson interviewed girls after the War in “The warlore of Saigon Bargirls”. “The best years of my life” said one lady. Probably like Thailand today, some chose the freedom and reward from this line of work, others have a depressing backstory. But women in Vietnam had 0 freedom before the war, their fathers and brothers controlled their life in the villages. Saigon meant independence, money and camaraderie with new friends. And the opportunity to hang out with young American guys.
Thanks for the comment. J. William Fulbright called South Vietnam “America’s brothel”. There are two and sometimes three sides to every story. Cheers.
Some big hotels have Casinos. Stayed at Grand on Dong Khoi and the Casino – no surprise – was open to everybody, not only hotelguests. Quite a few supercute young girls in uniforms were employed to give the visitors free softdrinks (beer?) and snacks. Perhaps they can be chatted up.. I have had success with staff in “normal” Bars. The Casino was a fun experience, but bloody hot, no AC.
Casinos are often hot beds of prostitution. See my old post on gambling and prostitution. Cheers!
Thanks, good read. Visited Casinos “a lot” 2000-2015, especially in Europe, and it was fun to see how different kind of girls worked the room. Thai ladies often had “bait girls” looking for prey (drunk winners), they established contact and other ladies continued. Thai also love gambling and their favourite daytime line of work generated cash to spend.
Most casinos seem to have at least some working women around. Cheers.
It is a shame you did not mention Saigon Japan town on Le Thanh Ton Street. Lots of very luxurious massage parlors and bars with fine hostess targetting foreigners (mainly Japanese and Korean though). Worth a try next time you visit HCMC ;)
I’ve mentioned Little Tokyo in my review of 15B/22 Spa on Le Thanh Ton. Cheers.
I have stayed at Lotte Legend nearby. Depending on what walk one chose, its possible to pass these places on the way to center/west of District 1. Tried a couple of Spas. Expensive but better massage compared to other massage venues in Saigon. The sex? So, so. I think the traditional knocking shops offer better value. Or try game and find a normal viet-girl. But beware of the rip of hostess bars.
Thanks for the comment Alex. Cheers.
Any info about Danang, Vietnam ?
I haven’t reported on Da Nang. Cheers.
Hi Rockit, Im heading to HCMC next month and wondering if you know any massage parlors similar to what can be found in Bangkok soi 22 and 33. Not asking for recommendations, I know you don’t give, just asking for advice on which part of the city to head to. My hotel is on District 1, ideally not too far would be ideal. Thanks as always! Cheers
To my knowledge there are no establishments like that anywhere in HCMC. Cheers.
