COVID-19 first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. The World Health Organization officially declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. So we are now into the third year of the pandemic. The effects on the global commercial sex industry are many.
I covered early effects of the pandemic on prostitution in March 2020. As things unfolded I was able to report further on the major changes that had taken place in the sex industry. Other reports followed including write ups on bar girls becoming cam models and go go bars turning to live streaming in an attempt to stay afloat.
Now seems like a good time to look back and reconsider the changes that have occurred. As “temporary closures” turned into permanent shutdowns the habits of millions of people have changed. Whether not all or even some of those changes will be permanent remains to be seen. But there can be no argument that the situation is much different now than it was at the end of 2019. And that applies to nearly every locale.
North America
North America was never really a hotbed of prostitution. Most of what goes on is limited to underground facilities, freelancers and low contact adult entertainment. Most of that remains even in these days though there are various differences that may be spotted by the most attentive.
Strip clubs in the United States seem to be more or less back to where they were in the years before the pandemic. There are some exceptions and select venues and areas have their own rules in place. But for the most part a person in almost any major city in America can go to a club and watch women dance in some state of undress for money.
The few legal brothels in the United States such as the Moonlight Bunny Ranch in Nevada are open and operating normally. The same can be said of most of the unofficial brothels located in Las Vegas where prostitution is actually forbidden by law.
Spas and massage parlors in the United States and Canada are for the most part open. Though most are taken measures to protect health. This includes increased cleaning and in many cases the use of things like masks or even rubber gloves. Prices for the most part have not changed despite inflation in other areas of the economy.
Latin America
Latin America is a large area covering two continents. Although one common language connects most of this region that is where some things end. As you might expect in an area with this size there have been various approaches and responses to the pandemic.
Countries like Mexico never closed their borders to passengers at any point in the pandemic. Others like the Dominican Republic closed temporary but reopened without restriction early on. In nearly all countries prostitution continues on virtually unabated. That applies both to the legal and regulated places as well as the underground or unofficial venues and individuals. There are of course some exceptions.
Bars, massage parlors and freelancers all remain active in the Dominican Republic. There is not much to show that there is a pandemic or slowdown at all. Though things always have appeared quieter since the unrelated rise of Youtube broadcasters and the disappearance of the lost bars of Sosua.
Bars in Tijuana remain open though all staff is supposed to be vaccinated. Street walkers and less official brothels haven’t changed much one way or another. As always money is the motivator and other things are second or maybe third thoughts.
Colombia requires visitors to be vaccinated. Some have gotten into trouble for showing up with fake vaccination cards. Meanwhile most of the available prostitution continues though some measured may be put into place here or there. The same could be said of some other official and semi-official red light districts around the region.
Europe
Europe is a vast continent with various countries. Some have followed their own policies. In some countries policies even vary by region. Overall Europe seems to have taken one of the strictest approaches outside of Asia and New Zealand.
Prostitution continues in Europe despite all the various lock downs and restrictions. This should surprise no one. Prostitution is not only the world’s oldest professional. It is also the most resilient.
Though the commercial sex industry in Europe is not operating on the level and scale that it was prior to 2020. Prostitution being legal and regulated in much of the continent means that it is also especially vulnerable to legal restrictions. The response to limited operation of the above ground industry has been an emergence of a more underground or at least unofficial sex industry.
So while a few FKK sex saunas have reopened with very limited staff and an even more limited customer base demand has gone elsewhere. Many have also been closed time and time again. One of the largest brothels in all of Europe even closed permanently.
This has allowed some freelancers and streetwalkers who remain in the game to charge more than they would have in previous times. This combined with an concerted effort by some forces to shutdown or relocate sex workers has had a real impact.
Some countries like Switzerland seem less impacted than others like Germany. But as we have seen over the last two years things can change overnight. While some areas have put together rules requiring brothels to close if there is a certain number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in an area there seems to be no end goal for a complete reopening in place anywhere.
Asia
Countries like China, Vietnam, Laos and even Japan have remained more-or-less closed off to foreigners for the entirety of the pandemic. Other countries like Cambodia and Thailand have gone back and forth with their policies. One day some people can center under certain circumstance. The next day the circumstances and people are different. It’s a fluid situation that has caused many would-be-travelers to simply postpone or cancel any plans.
Others have been more adventurous or ended up in the region for other reasons like family or business. They can find some available prostitutes though nowhere are things as they were a mere two years ago. Even if restrictions were not in place there are economic forces at play. A place like Pattaya or Angeles City simply cannot sustain huge numbers of sex workers with so few paying customers around. The massive Malioboro in Jakarta catered more to locals than anything but it too has closed its doors for good.
The powers or perhaps willingness of the state to enforce the laws also has something to do with it. So for example Brix in Singapore was completely and utterly shuttered. Then places like Walking Street, Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza in Thailand have been either shut down or very heavily regulated for much of the last 2 years. Big soapies like Celebs and Zayuri in Chiang Mai have closed too. Though they were apparently shuttered due more to economic impact than any specific legal restrictions.
Next door in Cambodia similar rules are in place; officially, bars there were closed for something like 600 days straight. But in reality many hostess bars were open the whole time for those who knew to knock on a door even if the lights were out. The same can be said for many massage parlors, karaoke clubs and brothels across the continent. This is apparently true even in some of the strictest environments like Macau, Hong Kong and mainland China.
Other places are officially open but with various protocols in place. For example some massage parlors and clubs in Jakarta require rapid tests to be performed before a massage. Clubs in the same city like the Classic Hotel are open at a limited capacity but they require customers to prove that they are vaccinated before they can enter. And some blowjob bars like 7 Heaven in Bangkok require customers to keep their masks on throughout their sessions. Of course these operate in the same cities where other places have no rules in place at all.
Looking ahead
Thus this is where we find ourselves in early 2022. The pandemic started in early 2020. The impact of that pandemic was felt instantly. Things have not recovered since even if there is a semblance of normalcy in some corners of the world for some period of time.
There is hope. Vaccines were developed in late 2020 and have been administered over the years since. New medicines have been developed and boosters have been administered too.
But there is also reason for dismay. Variants come and go. News continues to flow in. Much of it is negative. Regulations are dropped here and increased there. Pilot programs become permanent. Future plans are abolished before they are administered.
I have to admit that I have no special insight and I do not know where things will go from here. But I will continue to report on the commercial sex industry around the world as much as I am able. I thank you for reading and I hope you will continue to do so in the future.
Thanks for reporting. Do keep updating the commercial sex industry. The pandemic has changed everything. Good luck!!
Thanks for the comment Robert. Cheers.
This was the post i believe many have been waiting for. The pandemic has obviously kept willing men on the sidelines the past couple of years. Those looking to get back to the action are seeking to understand where the action actually is. Would love to see any notable updates to this article as places open and begin to return to some aspect of former glory. Nothing worse than to take that first trip in years only to be let down by shuttered establishments.
Thanks for the comment JJ. I have done my best to keep up with closings of venues I have reviewed on this site. Alas some closings are temporary while others are permanent. And it’s not always easy to differ between the two. I also have to deal with an entire world rather than just a particular country or city. Stickman has a new article that covers the main adult entertainment areas in Bangkok. His recent interview with Bryan Flowers of the Nightwish Group really puts things into perspective. If you’re not familiar the group owns over 2 dozen bars in Pattaya. In the interview Bryan says he employed 450 ladies and more than 87 support staff prior to the pandemic. Right now he has 80 ladies and 8 managers working. Localized reports like these are key. For the most part they all seem to point in a similar direction. For example there are the FKK in Germany operating with minimal staff like I mentioned in this report. Cheers.
Great post. But I’ll say that I’ve been either fortunate or stayed on the move enough to never find myself more than 30 minutes from at least a happy ending.
In the early months of the pandemic when all parlors were closed on order of local authorities, my regular massage plus fun gal would allow me to slip in the locked door where even the old mamasan lived and who always smiled big when the farang regular came for his regular gal. By June or so, as Thailand appeared to be well protected by keeping out new arrivals, I was able to explore usually heavily touristed spots on Phuket and Krabi and get my choice of the freelance market. But I’ve never been a bar or a-go-go patron so I can’t comment on how the closing of them affected guys.
In the states the AMPs where I’ve been (20 states in the last year?) have remained open and often very very open.
Latin America has plenty of opportunities. Yesterday I had four different indies texting me to see if I was planning to book them again.
The world has changed, but the basics have not. Have needs? Some one is there to fulfill them. YMMV
Thanks for the comment. Make no mistake. Sex work has not, and will not, disappear. But the quantity and quality sure can change. Cheers.
Good post FINALLY MATE!!
C-19 is surging in Europe. Fauci warns COVID-19 infection rates likely to increase in US. Hong Kong just padded 1 million cases and is in a surge of death.
Lot of things changed. Most ain’t back to normal. I thought it would take 3 years. Now we’re coming on it I think it could be longer still.
I can go out of doors and out of the country now. I can visit a massage if I wear a mask too. Thailand will let me in if I take a battering of tests quarantine and let them track me. But once I get in the bars are half shut and half fucked. No big fun to be had on the 6 like the old days even if you can find some willing granny on TF to come to your quarantine room.
I still can’t go to Japan and that’s a big thing for me. I loved those pink salons and fried octopus.
Thanks for the comment.
The pattern of when, where, and how we’re traveling has changed. Many international travel restrictions remain in effect — and outrageously complicated, leading to an uneven recovery.
It’s not just air travel. The hotel industry may never return to the way things were. You can check in with your phone now. Room service is on the way out. And yes, the good ol’ supply chain is affecting hotels too.
So the travel industry has, in some ways, recovered. But “recovered” isn’t quite the right word, since so much has changed and is unlikely to ever go back. People are traveling again, but they’re doing so in a different way, and to different places.
Same goes for the world of pay for play.
Thanks for the comment. Cheers.
Cant make a talented guess about airlines. But some insight in the hotel industry.
Check in process might change for ever, but there is a reason hotels provide buffet, spas, and room service – its because there is a demand, it adds value, thats why people pay more. There are already simple hotel alternatives for budget business travellers, where one have zero interaction with anybody els. But that concept attract few holiday goers. I think the premium segment in the hotel- resort business will be successful.
Thank for the insight. I wouldn’t mind avoiding some of the interactions I have been forced through over the years. Though I have had some pleasant check ins especially in Southeast Asia. I would prefer that hotels keep up with daily cleaning. Cheers.
I am not a fan of S. Korean p4p scenes in general due to many reasons, but from time to time I had to take some chances in Seoul for the past 2 years. Luckily I have not been infected with covid 19. It seems the pandemic affected the industry a bit but there are still lots of available joints for willing punters. Many Thai and Chinese girls are still working here and sometimes it is impossible to reserve the popular providers as they get sold out very fast or they do only few numbers per day. Now, the infected cases were soaring like 30,000 a day when I came back from a month long trip in Phnom Penh and I had a good time. In Cambodia, more than half the locals were not wearing a mask. Almost nobody was wearing a mask in the bars. I was usually the only guy in the bar. So many girls to choose from and I couldn’t help taking chance several times and was worried to get a positive result on my pcr test for coming back to S. Korea but it turned out negative. Perhaps, I am immune or the booster shot was working well. Cambodia has just removed all the entry restrictions for the vaccinated and you can get a visa on arrival and go free without a rat and a pcr test 72hr before arrival now!! Cheers!!
Thanks for the detailed report Deca. Glad to see you are doing okay. I think a lot of people around the world more or less abandoned regular mask wearing at least a year ago. In some places today it is rare to see one at all. With a history of mask wearing and over 350,000 daily infections plus over 300 daily deaths things in Korea are surely different. Though as you note sex work continues on. Cambodia was only ever really closed to foreigners for a very brief period. And many bars continued to operate right through the hundreds of days they were officially ordered closed. Cheers.
I’m still waiting for Japan to re-open. It’s my favorite place to go despite being so expensive. I think the effort/service the girls show there is still the best. I can’t believe they’re still closed at this point… hoping for opening to tourists at the end of the year.
You are not alone. Many would like to visit Japan. I am not sure when they will reopen to tourists. Though I wouldn’t necessarily expect it to be anytime soon. Kanpai Japan figures no announcements will be made before July. That’s not an official government source but their assessment seems realistic to me. Cheers.
The article says Vietnam is still closed off to foreigners, but as far as I know they recently reintroduced visa waivers for a dozen nationalities. Aside from that, I don’t have any insight on what things are like on the ground as far as bars and brothels are concerned.
This post was published two weeks ago. Vietnam recently began allowing tourists under certain conditions. A negative test is required along with $10,000 USD in health insurance and the download of a PC-Covid mobile app. This website contains the relevant information. Cheers.
I know it’s a difficult ask but I see this site as a top source in the latest news and developments on the p2p market.
It would seem possible given the diverse group of visitors to this site to potentially provide some sort of forum, chat, or community contribution to update the latest in openings and visit requirements as well as establishment news.
For example, while I understand it is easier to travel to Thailand right now with quarantine eliminated and reduced testing requirements, those who go to Thailand looking to visit the soapies will be sad to know that many are still closed and perhaps closed permanently.
Would be great to know what’s operating and the comparison to pre covid staffing levels for venues in Thailand and also some of the top destinations around the world welcoming to foreigners, such as fkk in Germany and saunas/ fishbowl in Macau.
For those who visit physical locations rather than booking 1:1 online, there’s really a lack of Intel on what the market is like.
I have done my best to report over the last year. I summarized the conditions in a wide swath of the world in this post. A recent report estimates that 90 percent of adult venues are closed in Thailand. That seems about right. In places like Japan fewer shops closed. In Germany some clubs are open but with minimal staff. In Cambodia new bars have actually opened. Saunas have been open in Macau for quite a while. It’s a wide world! Cheers.
Excellent point JJ. Cheers
Regarding Thailand.
2 big questions. If all restrictions are scrapped in time for next high season, then the industry will try to recover from a 3 year pause. Not an easy task.
Will there be a new generation of girl tempted to take part in this business, and how many of the old ones want to return?
I think the demand from visitors will remain strong. Its hard for travellers to cling on to woke pc values (or commitments to partners) when they experience Thailand.
A couple of years ago, a blogger in Bangkok wrote about how his male friends from the UK reacted when they visited him in Bangkok. No surprise, 95% of the guys cheated on their girlfriends. Old guys, young guys, the same.
A good friend is a conservative politician – he wants to join me on a holiday to Thailand. But I say No, it would crash his personal life.
Demand will remain strong, that’s for sure. And as always the demand creates the supply. It went fast, it’ll come back fast. It’s not like in between the economic situation of the country improved significantly to the point that country side ladies don’t need BKK nightlife money anymore. COVID was just a pause, not a road turn.
Now on the volume of venues remaining open and living in Bangkok for several year I’d say that the 10% mentioned above is too exaggerated, it’s rather 30% form what I see nowadays. And in fact some new places have opened lately, pretty interesting, a bit more high end with a deeper focus on service and quality of girls, yet with reasonable prices. Exactly spot on and in that extend COVID may have been an opportunity as well to refocus on what matters. Cheers
Thanks for the comment. This could all be true. Unfortunately no one can say for sure. My crystal ball is in the shop but I think there will be some marked and perhaps even permanent changes. The sale of sex will continue as long as their is a money based economy. But it could take on different forms. As the internet and social isolationism become more common among the younger generation and sexual mores become more open and free I expect to see more moves towards independent work, online meeting and booking, and even a shift from in-person sex work to online entertainment. I could certainly be wrong but that is definitely how things appear after two years. Cheers.
The latest news today-Pattaya is open but a shadow of it once was. I mean this literally! Half of Walking Street is dark at night, filled with wandering indians and abandoned buildings.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand says Thailand might secure just 30.9% international seat capacity of the pre-pandemic level in the upcoming high season.
Most European flag carriers have not resumed flights and frequencies to the pre-Covid level.
Japan remains closed to foreign tourists.
