Interview with Morshe from Asian Candy Shop

In yet another installment of my series of interviews with people in the sex industry, I recently talked with Morshe, the producer of Thai porn site Asian Candy Shop, formerly known as Asian Candy Pop. The results are presented here for you to see.

Although I have said it many times before, I do believe that this is a very interesting interview. Morshe gives a lot of insight and information about what goes into producing Thai porn. I trust that readers will enjoy.

How and when did you get into porn? Is the kind of Thai content you do now what you started out with?

I was suggested doing it some 12 years ago by a friend. He wanted to make money with the business.  I kept it in mind and bought a camera that was meant for shoots. I did amateur stuff in my room just as a hobby. The guy who suggested doing porn left Thailand in 2003 and never returned so I put the business on the back burner. 

Later on I ended up working with some guys doing porn here in Thailand by a girl I had known who called me up out of the blue back in 2004. She asked if I was interested in doing some performer work on shoots. So I eventually got into the director role and that’s what I do now. The content I do now is very similar to what I started out with.

Do you shoot in Thailand because it’s cheaper, more fun or for some other reason?

I’ve been here for so long whore mongering that I decided to make a business out of it.  That reason and no to the cheaper or more fun reasons.

When did you first travel to Thailand? How did you find about the commercial sex scene there? How has the country changed since your first visit?

I first came to Thailand in the mid to late 90’s. The commercial sex scene was alive and kicking then as it is now.  The country has become much more expensive over the years. The girls are less likely to go long time and the prices have gone up for girls especially in the last three to five years.

Have you been to any other countries known for their sex industry like say the Philippines? How did you like them? How do you think they compare to the Thailand?

I have been to the Philippines for whore mongering. I like the girls attitudes a bit better in the Philippines as well as the girls in the scene tend to be a few years younger on average. The girls tend to be slightly less attractive, but that’s probably because they get fat a bit quicker then the Thais do. That place has gotten more expensive as well and at this point it’s no longer cheaper to choose Angeles over Pattaya. So I probably won’t be back there but once every other year.

What is your first sexual memory? What is your best?

Not sure about this one, nothing interesting comes to mind.

What was the first porn you saw?

I think it was Loose Ends Part 2 with Erica Boyer who I thought was very hot at the time. Probably 1986 or 87.

What is the biggest inconvenience of making your porn flicks?

Looking for girls, a “coalition of the willing” if you will. I was just looking for girls last night and no takers. If you lower your standards you’ll find girls all the time.

If you could start over again would you still have done porn? Do the benefits outweigh the costs?

I’m not sure I would do porn again. It’s been very hard work and has yet to really pay off. There are things I really like about it, like shagging the girls when I get the chance but that’s usually off scene. I think this question is still in flux and still yet to be determined.

Have you had any issues with family or friends finding out about your adult work? Has it caused any problems in your personal life?

Oh yeah, family disapproves. Most don’t seem to care but some vocal members are quite irate.  Not a huge personal problem as I’m out of sight out of mind for the most part.

How difficult is it to find models? Is it more difficult now than it used to be? Some producers say the prices women want to model are rising and the amount they can actually make from the shoots are falling to the point where it almost doesn’t make sense to even make porn anymore. What do you say about that?

This kind of touches on things I’ve mentioned above.  It’s quite difficult to find models unless you lower your standards.  It’s always been quite difficult to find models for as long as I’ve been working, since 2006 at least. Now as difficult as then but I wouldn’t say more.  I heard that it was quite easy before 2004.  I don’t think the prices for models are rising.  As for the not making enough money to produce porn, it does seem that way. It really has been a struggle.

How do you deal with things like the increase of prices for sex services in Thailand, the conservatism of many Thai women when it comes to things like doing anal or even blowjobs, and the increase in internet awareness that has many Thai sex workers refusing to take any kind of sexual pictures or video?

The increase of price of sexual services, I suspect, that the girls are going with less customers but at a higher price, this is more a personal problem then it is with the porn business. The blow job problem hasn’t come up too many times so it’s rare we get a girl that won’t do a BJ. Anal is always difficult to get.  On the problems with girls worried about being on the internet, you just have to ask so many more until you get a taker.

Are most of the girls you shoot with pro prostitutes, semi-pros or total amateurs? Have any run into problems after being in your movies?

It’s a mix of the three. As for them running into problems, quite a few have had problems being seen on the internet but that’s usually because somebody showed them their picture rather then themselves or a family member having stumbled upon it.

Sometimes a guy will take a girl back to his room only to find out that things are a little fishy downstairs. Do you ever get a model who smells so bad that you’ve canceled a shoot?

No, never so bad that we had to cancel. The reason’s you would have to have to cancel on similar reasons would be if the girl had some weird growths or scars that were unable to be hidden. Most girls know the score better and won’t attempt the scene with out having some faith in their body’s appearance.

I’ve read that some guys who shot in Thailand but didn’t hide their identities have actually been banned from reentering the country. What about that?

Never heard of that, might be the case but I can’t confirm that.

What do you think about prostitution and pornography in general?

Prostitution is perfectly fine in my book. This wasn’t always the case but as I got out of my teen years I realized how similar prostitution is to any relationship.  The woman expects a provider and that’s what she gets. Prostitution gives her a moment’s provider but with less emotional baggage for both parties.  The man receives sexual services at the least and sometimes a very girl friend like experience. Pornography seems fine, it is very powerful imagery that incites the senses.

How do you think porn can continue to be profitable with all of the free content now available online? Has the advent of file sharing, tube sites and the like put a big dent in your earnings?

I think advertisers are going to have to take on the costs of producing porn. That or Kickstarter campaigns where the people who are fans of your work will pitch in donations for scenes. So the scenes will be paid for before the shoot. Free has hurt the industry and the business model will have to change going forward.

What is the last book you read? What is your favorite book?

Stephen King’s Wind Through The Keyhole.  I don’t know if it’s my favorite but very apropos of the times we live in is 1984.
