Fritz the Cat is officially an adult novelty store. Unofficially it is a meeting place for randy guys and gals. Fritz the Cat shares its name with an adult oriented comic that emerged way back in the 1960’s. I can’t be sure but from all appearances the Fritz the Cat store seems to have been around for nearly as long.
I have never reviewed a place like Fritz the Cat before. But since this interesting little venue is located just minutes from the previously reviewed Jill’s Gentlemens Club it seemed to be worth a look. Especially since my aim is to cover the commercial sex industry worldwide in all of its many facets. Here is what I found.
What it’s like inside Fritz the Cat
Fritz the Cat is located on the side of a major freeway. From the exterior it looks a lot like the myriad of other adult novelty stores scattered across flyover country. Inside it looks more like a head shop with various pipes on display along with a small selection of sex toys.
There is a clerk behind the counter who watches over things to some extent. Fritz the Cat only accepts cash and the booths and theater seem to be the main draw. So I would imagine his duties are mainly limited to making sure things don’t get out of hand so to speak. He may also have to man the mop after hours. I am not sure about that and as inquisitive as I am its not a question I wanted to ask.
The place is surprisingly clean and well kept inside. Sure this isn’t an operating theater. But it’s not a dirty and grimy place either. At least not in the places exposed to public view. You can tell that Fritz the Cat gets plenty of visitors. But it looks like the owners do enough upkeep to maintain a certain standard.
At this point you might be wondering why I would review a roadside adult shop in middle America. Without going too far off into detail I can say that this place is interesting for quite a few reasons. Those should be come more obvious as you read on.
What goes on inside and a summary
There are still a lot of places with booths around in America. These remnants of the pre-internet gay cruising days seem to rely on anonymity to bring in people. Well that and the glory holes. The interesting thing about Fritz the Cat is that it draws in a significant number of women and couples along with plentiful guys who want to meet them. So it has become somewhat of a swingers spot.
The club charges a paltry fee measured in dollars for access to the booths and the adult cinema. Both play porno movies that are preselected. So customers have no influence over what is shown. They can obviously control who they interact with. Though that is more limited in some extent when it comes to the holes. The adult activities are all consensual and recreational. No one works for the store except for the poor soul who mans the station. And he doesn’t do much interacting.
I am quite sure that a number of the guys who show up at Fritz on any given day would be more than happy to enjoy themselves with other men. Especially if no women happened to be on premises. I can’t speak from personal experience. But I can report on what I have seen and what my well honed instincts tell me. At the same time the customer base seems to be rather laid back and easy going. So I doubt any guys or gals looking for something in particular would be heavily pressured by people they weren’t interested in mingling with. There is a sort of grey area in these places. That could be part of why they are increasingly rare.
Fritz the Cat is certainly no adult entertainment mecca. It’s more of a roadside attraction that just happens to get a good number of visits for its size and location. With a significant number of the visitors being females looking for a good time the place does stand out from the pack. I wouldn’t go out of my way to return to the place. But I have to admit I am glad to know that places like this still stand in spite of everything. For that reason alone I have to give it two stars.
