Since the age of the enlightenment there was a rise in democracy and popular movements. The rights of the people were identified and pursued by some of the most forward thinkers. As time went on larger swaths of humanity gained access to these natural rights.
There were stops and starts. Even some major regressions along the way. History doesn’t march in a straight line. Though the overarching plot seemed to point towards a freer future for all. At least in theory.
Sexual rights expanded and maybe even exploded in the 1960’s. The sexual revolution rocked the world. Bras were burned as more people headed to the ballot boxes and streets to express themselves. Free love became a fashionable term in western society. Then came the backlash.
In some ways things were never really that free. Even in the heat of the movement people in some countries were being imprisoned or even killed for having “the wrong kind of sex”. Gays and sex workers in particular always had a difficult time in most societies.
Which way are we headed?
Many thought the 21st century would be different. Things seemed like there were opening up a bit when the calendar hit 2000. Still the echoes of the past remained. Even in decadent hyper-sexualized millennium America people were, some people were arrested for having sex toys as late as 2007!
