Review: Suzie Wong in Bangkok, Thailand

Suzie Wong is perhaps one of the most well known go go bars in Bangkok. The biggest reason for that may be the name. Though I am sure the nude dancers inside have a lot to do with it. While nudity was the norm in most go go bars years ago it is becoming rarer as time goes on. Suzie Wong breaks the modern mold in that way and some others.

Nearly all go go bars oriented towards foreigners in Bangkok are located inside of three areas. One is the famous Nana Plaza on Soi 4. The other is the somewhat dated Patpong area on Patpong Soi 1 and Patpong Soi 2. Finally there is the Soi Cowboy strip made world famous by the blockbuster movie The Hangover II.

Suzie Wong’s Agogo

Suzie Wong is located on Soi Cowboy closer to the intersection with Sukhumvit Soi 23. Although the street is filling with women and flashing neon lights the place is still easy to find. It has a large and clear sign that is easy to see. So even without the need for touts in the street holding signs people find their way inside with regularity.

Still Suzie Wong’s always seems to get more of a come and go stream of customers than a steady push. While places like Crazy House around the corner stay packed Suzie Wong’s has its ups and downs. At times it feels like the place is empty. Later the seats are filled.

Inside Suzie Wong

Suzie Wong’s is a long place that somehow feels cavernous. There is an elevated stage on the floor with plenty of booth style seats around. Unlike some other bars Suzie Wong’s is laid out in a way that gives most seats a clear view of the stage. That is important since they do regular dance routines of the old school variety. That means things like smoking with parts of the body that aren’t connected to the lungs.

It never seems like there are all that many women working at Suzie Wong’s considering the size of the place. There are definitely gals on staff but not in the numbers that you see in some other nearby bars. There also seem to be more older women working in Suzie Wong’s these days than there are in most Soi Cowboy bars. That may have something to do with the age of the bar itself. Or the style it has with its regular shows.

The gals at Suzie Wong are friendly and always ready to sit down with customers who buy them lady drinks. The prices are on par with the rest of the street. Though at 175 Baht ($6 USD) for a beer they are higher than they were just a few years ago. Barfines don’t seem to be as common at Suzie Wong as they are in some other go go bars. Again the centrality of the shows could have something to do with that. The fact that a punter could easily spend 5000 Baht ($165 USD) on a few drinks, a barfine and compensation to a lady might have even more to do with it.

Suzie Wong is an old style go go bar. But it lacks the charm and excitement of other places like Heaven Above. I can’t exactly put my finger on the reason for that. Suzie Wong is a place where a guy can walk in off the street and have a beer while watching an Asian women do tricks with her genitals and some ping pong balls. The fact that this doesn’t appear so special may say more about society than it does about this bar. Two stars.

  1. This place used to be legendary. Last time I popped in 2018 it was dead empty with just a couple of fat floppy tittied freaks pan handling for drinks. Don’t think I ever downed a 285B Chang that fast in my life.

    1. Thanks for the comment Mikey. I was there more recently. It certainly wasn’t in its prime. But I wouldn’t say it was that bad either. Cheers.

    1. Hi Louis. Most go go bars in Bangkok including Suzie Wong seem to have reopened. They may have reduced hours and staff. Regular tourists cannot visit Thailand at this time. I am not sure when they will be able to visit again. Despite what some say I honestly don’t think anyone does. The same goes for some other countries as well. If I hear anything I will report it. Though I am sure it will be big news that is widely broadcast. Cheers.

      1. Clearly a place from a long gone past. A kind of museum in itself to me . Still go there sometimes just to try to revive the vibes from the late 90s where this place was as wild as it was fun. But i remember too that in those days I couldn t care less about old timers that were telling me that soi cow boy was way better 20 years before. Go figures. If it is your first time you might enjoy it. If not it is better to avoid it. The street has turn into some kind of wounded ghost altogether since the covid. The only good news is that the blues rock band is back at fivestar ( talking about old timers these guys have seen it all) which is not a gogo anymore. Another shame actually. Oh well.

        1. Thanks for the comment Max. Calling Suzie Wong a living museum might be a good way to describe the place. I sometimes wonder what their lease agreement looks like. I would imagine any place in business so long turns a profit. Five Star has gone through many changes over the years. Suzie Wong is more frozen in time. Though I am sure there will be changes all across the country in the near future. Some changes seem to have already started. I appreciate the on the ground assessment of Soi Cowboy. Cheers.

  2. One of my favourite bars in Cowboy and not only for nostalgic reasons. Sure it has experienced low periods but they always seem to bounce back.

They had the most explicit lesbian show in Soi Cowboy, but the show lost it edge when Baccara took over the ownership – thats what people claim anyway. Friendly Mamasans. Until 2014? they had short time room upstairs. And the waitresess (?!) where not shy in the quite comfortable benches by the stage. I was a regular and got greeted with a beer and a BJ the moment I sat down. Good music. Good vibe. Barfined quite many times. Apparently Suzie Wong is open again…Perhaps selling food on the veranda?

  3. I can confirm that they are open. They have a BBQ in the front which seems to satisfy the Thai authorities to license them as a Restaurant. All I could see is people drinking on the front porch and bantering with the fully clothed ladies

  4. A fun episode. Low season a couple of years ago.

At that time the boys in brown controlled nudity in the Bars if the Bars were lagging behind in the yearly contribution to the local orphanage.

On stage were 6 more or less nude girls. I was relaxing with a Heineken in my normal place, middle row on the left. Suddenly an annoying sound started, and a yellow flashing alarm beacon went off in the ceiling and in 30 seconds all the girl had ran to their quaters upstairs and they were instantly replaced on stage by 6 fully dressed girls.

“What the fuck was that”, I asked my self. Apparently Security had spotted an inspection force in the Soi.

    1. Ha! I hadn’t noticed that light before. I did see some guys enter a few bars where “activities” were going on right in the open before. The guys didn’t pay any attention to that. They picked up their envelopes and left. Cheers.
