The vast development of sex toys over the last twenty years is simply remarkable. Even an experienced reporter like me has to be simply astonished by the wide array of implements for self-pleasure that have come along.
As I have noted in past reports I can still remember encountering early advertisements for sex toys in adult magazines. Decades ago, simple vibrators were advertised as “novelties” as sold out ads in pornographic print material.
Nowadays companies like Sohimi make a full array of sex toys and similar adult products available for purchase over the internet. So buying the next hot adult apparatus is as easy as pulling out your phone.
Sohimi actually wants people to increase their pleasure and happiness through the use of adult devices. They promote things like self-confidence and sexual well being!
The development of sex toys
Early sex toys for men were even more primitive than the first novelties. The early iterations of the “pocket pussy” were little more than rubber socks with slits in one end. Sure these male masturbators got the job done. But they were nothing like the amazing “ona holes” that are widely available today.
Sex dolls only add to the story. While I am sure that at least some guys have been fucking dolls since the first days of the teddy bear, early sex dolls took the form of inflatable units that resembled the floating rafts meant for pool play.
They were so basic and poorly thought out that one may have had a better time trying to hump an actual pool float. Indeed, those “sex dolls” were often given away at stag parties as a joke. It’s unlikely that many people took them seriously at all.
So how did they sell? I am not an expert in economics. But I can guess. First we have to remember that this was an age before social media. Or even the internet. So there was nowhere for one consumer to inform others about the products.
How sex toys improved
As mentioned, these kinds of products were also in their infancy. It wasn’t like today when you can research the difference between sex doll materials like silicone and TPE with a few taps of the fingertips.
Sometime around the turn of the century more modern and realistic sex dolls began to appear. The Real Doll made the biggest waves in the West. The groundbreaking product was prominently featured on all sorts of mainstream media including newspapers, radio shows and even television. The first models sold for more than some used cars at the time!
Today, there are more variations of sex dolls, vibrating toys, and onaholes than you could shake your stick at. Sex dolls come in all shapes and sizes and have become increasingly more affordable. Vibrators in various formats are marketed to both men and women. Male masturbators are sold in enough different variations to fill multi-level stores or big website’s like Sohimi’s!
Japan has led the way in sexual device development for years. In places like America, the word “Hitachi” automatically brings to mind the denma style wand! To this day, the land of the rising sun is far in advance of other countries with its massive sex toy industry. China too is a leader in sex toy development. So most adult products come out of the East.
Where will sex toys go from here?
We can only guess where things will go from here. I don’t think many could have imagined how things would have developed over the last few years. Though we may be able to find some indication of future developments.
As with most industries, it seems that AI will become intertwined at least to some degree. Something like an automated sex doll seems to be inevitable. I first saw prototypes of mechanical sex dolls years ago in Japan. Time will tell if such things will ever come to market for the general public.
Old standards will still continue to flourish. The good old pocket rocket continues to pleasure women the world over. Of course more advanced devices with different vibrating patterns and suction attachments are growing in popularity. But the classic is still loved.
